Bourton makes an ideal base for a multitude of walks in varied countryside. To the north and west there are the picture postcard villages, gentle rolling hills and streams of the Cotswolds, and a very pretty stretch of the Thames Path.  To the south and east rise the North Wessex Downs, an AONB. Bourton lies within the Vale of the White Horse, three miles from The Ridgeway which looks over the village. The Ridgeway and surrounding Downs are full of atmospheric areas evidencing thousands of years of human occupation including the White Horse at Uffington, Wayland's Smithy, Fyfield Downs, Iron Age Hill Forts and Avebury village and stone circle World Heritage Site. There are plenty of country and riverside pubs for refreshment!
